Orthotics

Orthotics

Orthotics can be used to treat biomechanical abnormalities in the feet by improving foot function during gait. Even the slightest misalignment or abnormality can result in significant discomfort and problems which can lead to:

  • Heel pain
  • Knee pain
  • Hip pain
  • Back pain
  • Flat feet
  • Corns and calluses
  • Arch discomfort
  • Tired aching feet
  • Bunions
  • Hammer toes
  • Claw toes

Gait Analysis

The Gait Scan equipment is used as a diagnostic tool to provide assessment and diagnosis of foot biomechanics alongside a full clinical examination.

These devices can be made or prescribed after a full functional assessment. It is vital to have a functional assessment to establish if orthotics are required. If orthotics are required . Temporary devices (if required) can often be made 'on the day' , whilst some specialist devices may have to be made specifically (prescription device) for your problem. There is a choice of prescription or off the shelf (customized) devices. Not all conditions require a prescription device

Prescription Orthoses

Made from moulds of your feet, together with a prescription taken from a Biomechanical evaluation and Gait Analysis.

Customised Preformed Orthoses

These are pre-formed orthoses, which are adapted for your individual needs, from a Biomechanical evaluation and Gait Analysis. These are not as accurate as prescription orthoses, but are a cheaper alternative and, depending on the problem may be the first choice of orthotic.

An Orthotic is an insert for the shoe, manufactured to exacting specifications of the foot (often from a cast) for the purpose of:

  • Alleviating foot pain
  • Controlling / correcting abnormalities in walking (gait) pattern
  • Controlling movement for the competitive athlete
  • Providing cushioning, or shock absorbency for the patient who stands or walks all day.
  • Helping the geriatric patient with a need for general
support and to help them remain ambulant.
  • Helping patients with knee, hip or back pain which originates at the foot
  • If you fit into any of the above categories you
    are a candidate for orthoses
